Setting a clear intention and managing your energy
“Intrinsic motivation grows out of the desire to engage in an activity because we value it for the inherent satisfaction it provides. Researchers have long found that intrinsic motivation tends to prompt more sustaining energy. A study conducted by the University of Rochester’s Human Motivation Research Group found, for example, that people whose motivation was authentic—defined as ‘self-authored’—exhibited more interest, excitement and confidence, as well as greater persistence, creativity and performance than a control group of subjects who were motivated largely by external demands and rewards.” ~ The Power of Full Engagement by Tony Schwartz and Jim Loehr
Quick summary:
- If you are clear with what you want to accomplish, the camera will pick it up.
- Ensure you are “ready” to be on camera by properly managing your energy.
- Bring your passion to the camera; it will be more fun for everyone.
To illustrate the points:
From Netflix’s House of Cards, here’s Kevin Spacey delivering a very clear message— I’m sure he knows his goals and is aware of his energy both on and off-camera.

Time to practice!
- On camera: think of 4 very different emotions (happy, sad, angry, calm)—just think them; when you watch it back, do you see the differences in your face, your eyes, THEN take a nursery rhyme and apply different intentions (scare, seduce, comfort, belittle, etc). How does the intention and energy shift? Now post this (or an excerpt) to the group!
- On camera: Determine a clear goal for your listener and talk about something with your topic that you are SUPER passionate about for 1-2 minutes; post it to the group!
